A Chief Data Officer, or CDO, is a high-level management position that sees the individual responsible for overseeing the processes that a company or organisation uses to store and manage their data.

In a world that is seeing mass technological change, the need for businesses to implement strong and secure data and AI strategies, as well as sustainability practices, is more important than ever before.

With this in mind, Technology Magazine highlights some of the leading Chief Data Officers from around the world who are committed to harnessing data to its full potential.

10. Eileen Vidrine, Chief Data Officer, US Department of the Air Force

Eileen M. Vidrine currently serves as the Department of the Air Force Chief Data and AI Officer for the Pentagon. She develops and implements strategies for enterprise data management, analytics, digital transformation and responsible and ethical AI to optimise performance and drive innovation in and across all missions and operations.

Vidrine began her government career in 1986 as an enlisted member of the US Army and was commissioned in 1987 through the US Army Officer Candidate School Programme as an army Transportation Officer. Later in her career, she has served in various positions of leadership, including in the Department of Defense.

9. Andrew Hill, Chief Data Officer, Unilever

Andrew Hill started his career at Unilever in 2017. Based in the United Kingdom as Chief Data Officer, his role sees him responsible for the global data, information and advanced analytics agenda across the business.

He has also spearheaded the organisation’s data-driven response to ongoing supply chain disruption while hoping to enable future growth. In addition, Hill was recognised in 2022 as the most influential person in data and analytics in the 2022 edition of the DataIQ 100.

8. Moez Hassan, Chief Data Officer, Royal Caribbean Group

Moez Hassan

Moez Hassan is an accomplished data and analytics executive with experience in developing global high-performance teams and implementing innovative business strategies to enhance customer experience. His goal with the Royal Caribbean Group is to drive organisational growth and profitability by leveraging data analytics and AI.

Hassan is responsible for data strategies across the company’s global operations, which includes over 77,000 employees, seven million annual guests and a fleet of 63 cruise ships. His role as Chief Data Officer builds upon the data-driven success of the company and aims to strengthen the focus on data management and governance.

7. Jim Oliver, VP Chief Analytics Officer, eBay

Jim Oliver joined eBay in his current role in early 2021, after six years at his previous job, Sam’s Club, where he was hired in 2014 to build its analytics team. After delivering analytics, reporting, insights and experiments for website, marketing, membership and merchandising, he moved to the role of VP analytics, insights and decision sciences.

He is a goal-oriented and accomplished executive with a demonstrated track record using data and analytics to deliver business growth, improve customer experiences and create data-driven tools and products.

6. Maria Macuare, Global Chief Data Officer, Mondelēz International

Maria Macuare is an Business Intelligence and Analytics Executive at Mondelēz International, with experience working in the fastest developing markets in the world, becoming a trusted advisor for company executives. Her work in data has resulted in companies making unbiased, faster and better data-based decisions.

With more than 20 years in the industry, Macuare’s goal at Mondelēz International is to accelerate business value to transform the organisation into a data-driven enterprise. She has previously held data leadership roles at Campbell Soup Company and Procter and Gamble. 

5. Chandan Vijay, Chief Data Officer, ABB

Chandan Vijay has been ABB’s Chief Data Officer since May 2023, which sees him leading the data and analytics strategy and execution for the energy industries. He works to deliver innovative solutions that drive business value and customer satisfaction. 

Vijay holds over 20 years of experience in managing complex IT projects, products and programs across the world. He remains passionate about leveraging technology to inspire innovation and drive business growth, having received multiple awards for his contributions. He has previously held very senior roles at Honeywell and Cognizant.

4. Matthieu Dumergue, Chief Data Officer, PwC

Matthieu Dumergue holds more than 15 years of experience in data, digital, IT and operating model transformation projects with a strong business lens. He has worked for PwC as Chief Data Officer, based in France, since September 2022. 

His areas of expertise include data and IT, asset management and project management. The main challenges that he faces in his job role is maintaining good quality data and how it can provide effective business growth within the organisation.

3. Dave Salvagnini, Chief Data Officer, NASA

David Salvagnini

David Salvagnini serves as the Chief Data Officer at NASA, having held the position since June 2023. He formerly served as the Director of the Intelligence Community Chief Information Officer (IC CIO) Architecture and Integration Group (AIG) and Chief Architect. 

Before joining the IC CIO, Salvagnini held a variety of positions at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), including Chief Data Officer, and Deputy Chief of the Enterprise Cyber and Infrastructure Services Division. He was appointed to the Senior Executive Service as the Senior Technical Officer for Enterprise IT and Cyber Operations at DIA in June 2016.

Salvagnini’s experience includes all aspects of enterprise IT service delivery, including research, engineering, testing, security and operations. 

2. Garvit Gupta, Global Chief Data Officer, Capgemini

Based in India, Garvit Gupta has defined and implemented the enterprise and client data strategy for Capgemini, along with business strategy for data management, analytics, data driven business transformation, data governance, data lake, data protection and sustainability.

She is a leader in her field, with more than 20 years of experience transforming data into a corporate asset for clients and organisations across a wide range of business departments. Also specialising in monetising data and growing end-to-end profits, she has achieved several accolades, including winner of the ‘Top 100 Global Data Champion’, ‘Inventor of the Year’ and ‘Data Transformer’.

Prior to her role at Capgemini, Gupta has worked in prevalent data-led roles at Cognizant, Accenture and IBM Global Services.

1. Marco Vernocchi, Global Chief Data Officer, EY

Marco Vernocchi

By pioneering new ways to collect, curate and use data, Marco Vernocchi and his team are putting trusted, intelligent data at the heart of EY and working to multiply the value for clients. 

Prior to joining EY, Vernocchi held global and regional digital and analytics leadership positions. For almost three decades, he has worked with technology and media giants and start-ups to help companies use data, analytics and AI to reinvent how they operate, engage with customers and improve business performance.

Vernocchi has an engineering and industrial management degree from Politecnico di Milano and is now a regular speaker at global conferences.
